If there’s one thing that Plettenberg Bay has in spades, it’s natural beauty. And, when better to enjoy that natural beauty than during the magical golden hour as the sun rises and sets.

Here are some favourite spots to take in these special moments with a coffee or a glass of wine, and enjoy nature’s light show of pinks, oranges and purples complete with a salty sea breeze and the sounds of the ocean…

ROBBERG PENINSULA (sunrise and sunset)

Both sunrises and sunsets are particularly spectacular on Robberg. The reserve opens at sunrise and closes at sunset, so times change with the season – it’s best to check before you head out. Sunrises are best enjoyed from the viewing deck on the eastern side of the peninsula where the sun rises from behind the Tsitsikamma Mountains, creating a gorgeous golden halo. Sunset is best enjoyed on the wilder western side, with a glass of Plett bubbly and a picnic; the ocean turns to pink as the sun sets along the coastline. Evenings on Robberg are popular, so aim to get there early.

KEURBOOMSTRAND (sunset)

If you’re looking for views back across the bay towards Robberg, then head to the Keurboomstrand and Arch Rock beaches. These international Blue Flag beaches seem endless and are excellent for dolphin- and whale-watching, in season, and the sunsets are gloriously fiery and intense. Take your time and explore the rock formations and rock pools while waiting for the sunset light show.

LOOKOUT BEACH (sunrise)

Whether you’re on the beach or at the slightly elevated Whale Tail viewpoint, Lookout Beach is definitely one of the best places in Plett to start your day. The sun rises from behind the Tsitsikamma Mountains, silhouetting the dramatic peaks and painting the ocean gold and orange. Lookout Beach is popular with pansy-shell hunters and, with the lagoon nearby, is also a superb choice for young families. Pack a breakfast picnic, grab a blanket and some bodyboards and enjoy the first few hours of the day!

ROBBERG BEACH (sunrise and sunset)

A sunset stroll along Robberg Beach is lovely as the ocean and wet sand turn peach and then pink. You’ll find surfers and swimmers enjoying the last light of the day and, if the tide is low, keep an eye out for pansy shells in the shallows and dolphins in the waves. There is an annual tradition among Plett locals that, on the first of January, they’ll gather on Robberg Beach to watch the sunrise – we can’t think of a better way to start the year than watching Plett’s first light dawn on the new year.
